Staying in central Santa Cruz: the main square, culture and where to sleep

To explore Santa Cruz de la Sierra's old town, start at Plaza 24 de Septiembre. Around it you will find the cathedral, art spaces and historic buildings. Staying downtown can make sense if you want to spend time in this part of the city: choose an address that fits your daily plans.

Start with the square and cathedral

The Metropolitan Cathedral, the Minor Basilica of San Lorenzo, faces Plaza 24 de Septiembre at the corner of René Moreno. Its twin brick towers are a useful landmark. Begin your walk in the square and choose where to go next; if you want to enter the church, check access that day and respect services.

Stop at Manzana 1

Manzana 1 is a free art space at Independencia and Ayacucho, by the main square. It occupies a historic building and hosts exhibitions; the adjoining plaza also hosts outdoor displays. Check its listing and programme before going to see what is on during your visit.

Continue through the old town

Casa Municipal de Cultura Raúl Otero Reiche, Casa Melchor Pinto and the La Recova craft arcade are among the cultural stops highlighted by the city's tourism office around the square. Choose one or two that interest you and check their programmes. The walk does not need to become a checklist.

Choose a location around your trip

Downtown does not mean directly on the main square. Before booking, open each property's map and compare its address with your sightseeing or meeting locations. If your plans are in Equipetrol or at Fexpocruz, also compare options in that area and the journey from your chosen address: traffic changes travel times.
